What Is BHRT?

BHRT stands for bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. What does that mean? Bio-identical refers to how molecularly similar the supplemental hormone is to the human hormone. Other supplemental hormones such as the ones administered by conventional physicians are not bio-identical. Bio-identical hormones are derived from plants while synthetic hormones are derived from animals. Hormone replacement therapy is the purpose of the bio-identical hormones. People who lack certain hormones or who have too much of a certain hormone may benefit from BHRT.

What are BHRT Injections?

Bioidentical Estradiol and Testosterone injections can be given every 3 weeks. The advantages are numerous: The onset of symptom relief is rapid, usually within 1-3 days; They are affordable, even if not covered by insurance. One doesn’t have to remember to take a daily pill or apply creams, gels or patches. Injections have more dosage ranges and act more rapidly than pills or creams, and are frequently used when more common forms of HRT don’t work. They, along with pellets, are especially helpful in women who have had their ovaries removed because they have such low levels of estrogen and testosterone. The dosages can be adjusted until the right combination of the two hormones provides optimal benefits with minimum side effects. Either or both hormones can be given depending on individual needs. Injections, like pellets, enter the blood stream as if they were released by the ovaries. They do not pass through the liver like oral hormones which are metabolized [changed] from their original form. Oral medication are known to increase the risks of blood clots in the legs and lungs. Transdermal [through the skin] estradiol does not increase the risk of blood clots and is the safest way to administer that hormone. Because pellets and injections use generic bioidentical hormones, they have not been studied as extensively as patches, gels and sprays that have been approved for usage by the FDA; however they have been used “off-label” for over half of a century and numerous smaller scale studies support their relative safety. It is unlikely that pharmaceutical companies will ever spend the hundreds of millions of dollars necessary to get FDA approval with large long term studies because they would be unable to profit from this investment.

What are BHRT Oral Formulations?

Oral Bio-identical Estradiol and Progesterone formulations are FDA approved, effective and affordable. . They are affordable. Though oral estrogens do slightly increase the risk of blood clots in the legs [a 1 in 1000 additional risk per year ], the affordability and simplicity of use make this formulation a good option. Oral FDA approved bio-identical testosterone is not available. Estratest is not a bio-identical hormone, but it is the only FDA approved form of testosterone [synthetic methyl-testosterone]. It is Esterified Estrogen combined with Methyl-testosterone in two dosages. Though generic, it’s price is volatile. We advise our patients to check cash prices on GoodRx.com website for best prices on this as well as any other medicine not covered by insurance.

What is Bio-identical Hormone Replacement (BHRT) therapy?

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, or BHRT, is the most natural way to overcome hormone deficiencies and hormone imbalances at any age. Bio-identical hormones have many benefits over conjugated hormones. These hormones are delivered to patients in the form of pellets. These pellets are placed just under the skin in an outpatient procedure with less than a week of recovery time before patients can return to their normal active lifestyles and exercise routines. Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) for women optimizes the desired hormones of a patient within seven to ten days. Every BHRT pellet is custom created with every patient’s unique physiology in mind. Because of this, every treatment is tailored to each patient in order to ensure success in the balancing of their hormones. Furthermore, BHRT uses bio-identical hormones derived from plants, not animals, which more closely mimic the hormones naturally present within men and women than synthetic or animal-derived hormones. BHRT is biologically identical to your own natural hormones and thus may have fewer, less significant side effects.
